THE VICARII IN ROMAN TIMES

By the time of Diocletion, further changes in the organization and the administration of the Roman Empire  were desperately needed. The task of dealing with the numerous  problems of the vast Roman state was obviously greater than one man  could manage effectively. Diocletian created a board of co-emperors and  split the Empire into eastern and western halves. A collegiate system was  established comprising two senior rulers (augusti) in each part and two deputies (caesars) who would succeed them.

This Tetrarchic system did not last for long (AD 293-313), but its  repercussions survived in the eventual division of the Empire into two  halves, which would operate almost independently (AD 395). Diocletian attempted to eliminate threats of insurrection of powerful officials by separating civil and military authority in the provincial administration.  He also created a system of smaller provinces grouped into twelve larger units (dioeceses), controlled by governors (vicarii) directly responsible to the emperor.

"The Emperor Diocletian divided the Roman empire into twelve dioceses, each governed by a vicarius.  When Britain was made a diocese, London came into its own, as the local vicarius was based there. He was the highest political authority in Britain, reporting only to the praetorian prefect of Gaul, Spain and Britain. The diocese of Britain itself was divided into four provinces, each governed by a praesides.  (Scullard 171)."

THE VICARII  – in Scotland.  Clan McVicar

Kintyre, Western

The ancient homeland of
Clann Mac A’ Phiocair is Kintyre in Western  Argyllshire.
The Roman legions knew them as the Vicarii,’ literally, ‘those who sacrifice themselves for others.’ In Gaelic they were known as Mac A’ Phiocair which became Anglicised to MacVicar. The remains of
BalMacVicar Township can still be seen on the Mull of Kintyre.

With the demise of Roman power in
Britain the power vacuum was filled by local men of learning, power, influence and Christian values - the title and position of this ancient office eventually descended to the Vicars of today.  Also from these Roman roots grew the associated words, names and titles - Vicarage, Vicary, Vickare, Vickery, Vickary, Vickory Vickry and others ...

Also found in Devonshire. Some were also from La Vacherie, and acquired their seat at Dunkeswell in
Devon soon after the Norman Conquest in 1066.

The Scottish clan crest MacVicar is an eagle and thus they became known as
‘The Sons Of The Eagle.'
