POSITION ON THE ARTS AND CULTURE

GENERAL COMMENTS

GLOBAL ACTION (AUSTRALIA) champions a strong, independent, vibrant and relevant Australian approach to the arts and culture.

While drawing and learning from the rest of the world, Australia has already developed its own proud culture and long ago threw off its cultural cringe. The world now sees Australia as a distinctively unique entity in arts and culture and not just an appendage to some other country.   This will be encouraged.

Australia competes with the world on equal terms in all areas of the arts, especially television and motion picture and music. This also will be encouraged.

Rather than squander scarce arts funding on projects that provide little benefit GLOBAL ACTION (AUSTRALIA) will review all spending with a view to refocusing on projects that value add to the cultural databank of the Australian people.

THE FILM AND TELEVISION INDUSTRY

75.9% of new program launches in Australia from Sept 2002 to April 2003 were foreign.  68.7% or airtime hours were foreign programs.
ENCORE Oct 2003.

GLOBAL ACTION (AUSTRALIA) fully recognises that a strong commercial motion picture and television production industry will be a major export earner and employer and we will therefore secure and direct significant new funding, investment benefits and infrastructure into this area of the arts to create an engine for even more funding.

In addition to working with international players in the film and television industry  GLOBAL ACTION (AUSTRALIA) will strive to enable local business to prosper.

GLOBAL ACTION (AUSTRALIA) will closely monitor the progress of the FTA (Free Trade Agreement) between Australia and the USA and supports the SPAA (Screen Producers Association of Australia), the ASDA (Australian Screen Directors Association) and the AFC (Australian Film Commission) in their fight to preserve and if possible increase market share for home grown product.

THE MUSIC INDUSTRY

GLOBAL ACTION (AUSTRALIA) will work closely with the Australian music industry to focus expertise, talent and resources towards tangible excellence, opportunity and financial growth.

MULTICULTURALISM AND THE ARTS

GLOBAL ACTION (AUSTRALIA) views multiculturalism as a two edged sword.  On the positive side it brings great and highly valued diversity to our arts and culture.  On negative side it can be divisive if cultures keep to themselves and do no spread their unique gifts to the wider community.

GLOBAL ACTION (AUSTRALIA) sees Australia as a single great people who share their diversity, not as a collection of squabbling tribes each bent upon imposing its will on the rest.

CULTURAL EVENTS

GLOBAL ACTION  AUSTRALIA views major cultural events not only as valuable entertainment but as an opportunity to promote Australia in the eyes of the world.
